Apps and Extensions to Support Access for Individuals with Dyslexia and other Reading Challenges

Individuals with dyslexia and other reading challenges process text in a different way than others may. While it’s important to identify those who may have dyslexia and other reading challenges, the field of neuroscience has been researching how brains work when processing text- whether it be from a book or audio. The results of a study reveal that regardless of input (ie text, audio, etc), the same regions of the brain are activated. Meaning that words tend to activate the same brain regions with the same intensity, regardless of input.

Given this, it’s important to support individuals with dyslexia and other reading challenges with a combination of efforts. While remediation is important, the use of Assistive Technology, including text to speech solutions, audio formats, large print, or specialized fonts can serve as a bridge to access in the way that makes sense for the individual. Having options, choice, and flexibility on the ways learners read and understand text serves to honor the unique variability that is inherent in every learner.

Apps and extensions are a way to help support individuals with dyslexia and other reading challenges. With embedded features such as text to speech, color gradient, and font customizations, apps and extensions are a great way to support learners with dyslexia and reading challenges. Using apps and extensions with these features helps to provide access to grade level content, empowers learners, and supports challenges.
