Podcasts can be a great professional development tool. One can listen anytime, anywhere. Often times, as an itinerant AT Specialist who spends a lot of time in their vehicle, I will listen to podcasts to acquire new information in order to learn and grow as an educator. This type of “bite-sized” PD works well when pressed for time or want to maximize time, or acquire information in an audio format, which kind of feels like listening to talk radio.
Many podcasts will offer a transcript, which makes them accessible to those who are deaf and hard of hearing.
There are so many educators and agencies who are delivering great content through podcasting. Here is a list of my 5 favorite inclusive learning podcasts for everyone (in no particular order):
1. IT4All
Mike Marotta delivers powerful sound bytes of ways to leverage Assistive Technology in the inclusive environment. The information is easily implemented in inclusive settings, and episodes are not longer than 15 minutes. Check out an episode here.
2. Talking with Tech AAC podcast
Rachel Madel and Chris Bugaj deliver episodes that are specific to AAC access and use in the least restrictive environment. Not only do they focus on K-12, but they also focus on Higher Ed and Adults who use AAC. Episodes help to inform best practices around AAC and how to integrate AAC in innovative and inclusive ways. Check an episode here.
3. Think Inclusive Podcast with Tom Villegas
In 7 Seasons, Think Inclusive has fantastic content for parents, educators, advocates, and individuals who are supporting Inclusive practices. Inclusion is more than just a mindset- it requires action, which this podcast consistently delivers on both fronts. Check an episode here.
4. UDL in 15 Minutes
Loui Lord Nelson offers a buffet of options in her series on Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Each episode is 15 minutes long and contains interviews with educators who are implementing UDL as foundational practice to meet the needs of all learners. Check an episode here.
5. Think UDL Podcast
Think UDL delivers ways to leverage the UDL framework in Higher Education in order to promote access, choice, and flexibility for all learners. They have a wealth of information and resources from leaders in the field that is extremely beneficial to those in Higher Education. Check an episode here.
