October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. Dyslexia is defined as a general term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols, but that do not affect general intelligence.
The folks at Made By Dyslexia, founded by Kate Griggs, serve to empower individuals with dyslexia by re-educating the world around the brilliance of “dyslexic thinking.” Kate Griggs eloquently describes this in her TedTalk below:
As the video and website suggests, Through early identification, specially designed instruction, and the use of Assistive Technology and Accessible Educational Resources that capitalize on an individual’s strengths while supporting areas of challenge, the perception of Dyslexia can be shifted from a deficit model to a strength-based model. It’s time that we strive to empower individuals with Dyslexia to be successful in school and in life through the important paradigm shifts illustrated by Made by Dyslexia and Kate Briggs. Dyslexic thinking is creative, brilliant, innovative, and magical.
